Understanding the Amplicon - The Genetic Photostat

Biomedical Research Unit and Lab Animal Centre (BRULAC) and Dental Research Cell (DRC), Saveetha Dental College has organized a CDE program for I year Postgraduate students on 25th May 2018 on the topic “Understanding the Amplicon - The Genetic Photostat”. The Speaker for the Guest lecture was Dr. L. Kavitha Shankar, Senior Lecturer, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Ragas Dental College & Hospital, Uthandi, Chennai.Dr.J.Vijayashree Priyadharsini, delivered the welcome address and introduced the speaker to the gathering.

The Speaker, Dr. L. Kavitha Shankar discussed about the quarks of “Polymerase chain reaction”, which is the technique that has revolutionized clinical diagnosis and research. The lecture covered topics pertaining to the history, sources of DNA, components of PCR, its types, and applications in different specialties of dentistry and medicine. Even the intricate details on setting up a PCR reaction and troubleshooting were made more palatable to the audience. The session was interactive with active participation from the students.

Dr. D. Ezhilarasan, Dr. J. Vijayashree Priyadharsini, Dr. A. Padmaraj, the Faculties of BRULAC & DRC presented the certificate and gift to the Speaker Dr. L. Kavitha Shankar. Dr. M. Karthik Ganesh delivered the Vote of Thanks and concluded the session.

 

Importance and Relevance of Pre-Clinical Studies in Dental Research

The Department of Biomedical Research Unit and Lab Animal Centre (BRULAC) and Dental Research Cell (DRC), Saveetha Dental College has organized a CDE program on “Importance and Relevance of Pre-Clinical in vivo and in vitro Studies in Dental Research” for I year MDS students on 18th May 2018. The Speaker for the Guest lecture was Dr. S. Priya, Reader and Head, Department of Pharmacology, Sathyabama Dental College and Hospital, Chennai.

Dr. M. Karthik Ganesh presented the welcome address and introduced the speaker to the august gathering of Postgraduate students and staffs of Saveetha Dental College.

In her lecture Dr. S. Priya discussed the fundamentals of Research and various fields of research. Then she outlined systematically the pre-clinical trials on in vivo and in vitro models. In each pre-clinical studies, she gave a clear overview about the current studies undergoing and the models available in general and also with respect to dental sciences. It was an apt speech as it fulfilled all needed insights into research and what is required for Postgraduate students at the initial stage of their research carrier. The Speaker correlated all pre-clinical trials with updated experimental examples. The Speaker gave a special emphasis to the in vivo and in vitro experimental studies with lots of dental correlations and applications.

The Speaker Dr. S. Priya was felicitated then presented with certificate and gift by Dr. D. Ezhilarasan, Dr. J. Vijayashree Priyadharsini, Dr. A. Padmaraj. The session was concluded with Vote of Thanks delivered by Mr. N. Ashok Vardhan.

Awareness Program & Genetic Counselling

The Team BRULAC & DRC initiated the Awareness Programs and Genetic Counsellings for public on various medical issues. The first of its kind was organized on the occasion of "World Nutrition Day" on 28th May 2018 emphasizing the Motto – "Maternal Nutrition: A Key to Healthy Generation – A Step towards Nutrigenomics".

In connection with this "Genetic Counseling" was given emphasizing on the importance of maternal nutrition and deficiencies associated with birth defects.

Students from department of Orthodontics had returned from Korea attending students exchange programme. The shared their experience with joy.

Followed by edify presentation by CAD-CAM department. They had teaching innovations for dental technicians and dentists as well. They gave a glimse of the 3D printing and showcased their work.

The department of implantology proved there excellence once again they had numerous MoUs, funds and CDE progemmes to their credit. 

World Hand Hygiene Day: Guest Lecture

Department of Microbiology observed the World hand hygiene day on 5th of May 2018 in the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital premises with the motto for the year 2018 as “It’s in your hands. Prevent sepsis in health care”.

The faculties Mr.N.P.Muralidharan, Dr.R.V.Geetha and Dr.A.S.Smiline Girija met the clinicians, laboratory technicians, nursing staff, students, interns and class IV servants with deliberations on the issues with improper hand hygiene and emphasized the need for proper hand hygiene. Special lectures for interns were arranged in the concerned clinical departments. Posters were displayed at all the clinics to create awareness about the hand washing methods and hygienic protocols to be followed in the dental wards. Demonstrations on proper hand washing methods were also portrayed by the faculties.

Edify- Oral Oncology

4th season of oncology edify, started with the introduction of the department members. They also spoke about the new fellowship program they have started. The teaching methodology was highlighted with the intra-operative hands-on training given to the students being stressed on. The various departmental activities like the best paper award received, the chapter contribution in a textbook, paper publications were spoken about. They also spoke about the micro-Vascular cases they did in their department and concluded the edify with the testimonials of their patients.

Demystifying Cleft

Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College has organized a CDE program on “Demystifying Cleft” for I year BDS students in Anatomy Lecture Hall on 2nd May 2018 at 10.00am. The Speaker for the Guest lecture was Dr. S. Maithreyi, MS (General Surgery),   M.Ch. (Plastic Surgery), Assistant Professor, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery,                         Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, Porur, Chennai.

The CDE program started in an unusual way, where the Speaker started her presentation before the inaugural address by the Department, as she commenced the session in a friendly approach. The lecture was more like an interactive session and the students were questioned on basic anatomy and various developmental aspects of palate. She then clearly gave an overview of anatomy and development of palate. She also discussed the developmental anomalies of palate and showed videos on corrective surgeries of cleft lip and cleft palate. The students enjoyed the seminar as they actively participated in discussion and diagnosing the different kinds of cleft lip and cleft palate conditions by identifying various photographs in the presentation.

At the end of the seminar the Speaker gifted the students with chocolates who came out with spontaneous answers during the lecture session.

Dr. S. Maithreyi was felicitated and presented with gifts by Mrs. M. S. Thenmozhi, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy.

International Nurse Day

12th May is the birthday of Florence Nightinagle and is celebrated as International Nurse Day every year. Hence an awareness program was conducted for the nurses and the trainees of the Can Stop organisation at Madhavaram on 12th May, 2018 to raise awareness regarding the right to health of the patients and the nurses. The nurses were enlightened, using videos, about how to prevent needle stick injuries in the clinical set up. Also, oral hygiene instructions were demonstrated to them .At the end of the program toothbrushes and toothpastes were distributed to them.

Emerging trends in Nanotechnology

Department of Pharmacology has conducted a CDE on 28th April 2018 on Emerging trends in Nanodentistry. Dr. S. Rajeshkumar, Research Scientist, Nanotherapy Lab, School of Biosciences and Technology, Vellore Institute of   Technology (VIT) has given an extensive talk on nanoparticles and its biomedical Applications. He has extended his helping hand to prepare nanoparticles for the interested budding dentist.

Current Concepts in Clinical Anatomy of Thyroid Gland with its Intriguing Anatomical Basis for Dentistry

Department of Anatomy, has organized a CDE program on “Current Concepts in Clinical Anatomy of Thyroid Gland with its Intriguing Anatomical Basis for Dentistry” for I year BDS students in Anatomy Lecture Hall on 27th April 2018 at 10.00am. The Speaker for the Guest lecture was Dr. C. S. Janaki, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, Aasan Memorial Dental College, Chengalpet.

Mr. K. Yuvaraj Babu, Reader, Department of Anatomy introduced the speaker and the topic for the lecture to the august gathering of students and staffs of Saveetha Dental College.

Dr. C. S. Janaki was felicitated and presented with gifts by Mrs. M. S. Thenmozhi, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy.

In her lucid lecture Dr. C. S. Janaki discussed elaborately about the basic anatomy of Thyroid gland, its coverings, relations and development. Each anatomical feature of Thyroid gland was connected and correlated with applied and clinical anatomy. The Speaker gave a special emphasis to the clinical conditions of basic anatomy and developmental anomalies with lots of Dental applications and correlations.

National safe motherhood day

he National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is celebrated every year on April 11 to create awareness on proper healthcare and maternity facilities to pregnant and lactating women. It also seeks to create awareness about the institutional delivery, reducing anemia among women and better pre and post natal health care are necessary for mothers. The theme of 2018 NSMD was ‘Respectful Maternity Care’

Good dental or oral care is important for maintaining healthy teeth, gums and tongue. Women have special oral health requirements during the unique phases in their lives. Changes in female hormone levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause exaggerate the way gums react to plaque.

On the National safe motherhood day, Department of Public health dentistry, Saveetha dental college, conducted an awareness programme on oral health among women during pregnancy and also created awareness about how to take special care of oral hygiene during pregnancy. An awareness speech was given about the importance of oral health for women stressing about the hormonal imbalance during pregnancy.

HISTOPATHOLOGY SLIDE READING SERIES PART IV- “PAEDIATRIC ORAL PATHOLOGY”

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Saveetha Dental College conducted  Histopathology Slide Series Part 4, Paediatric Oral Pathology on 5th April 2018. Diagnosis is very crucial for prompt treatment. This responsibility is even higher when dealing with a child, for every diagnosis affects the child physically, emotionally and socially. The CDE was conducted in order to make ourselves and our fellow oral pathologists adept in this area,  and was was dedicated to the children of the world.

The first session was on Pediatric Dermatopathology, by Dr. Ramkumar Ramammoorthy MD, Consultant Dermatologist, Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital Chennai who brought in array of case scenarios with explicit focus on oral lesions in children. The second session was on Pediatric Hematology with special focus on Oral Cavity by Dr.Harshitha C.Mouli MD, DCH, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatric Hematology, Institute of Child health and Hospitals for Children, Egmore, Chennai. The session had case discussion of children with hematologic disorders, emphasizing on the oral presentation along with the the classical hematological findings in the blood smears.

The third session was on Pediatric soft tissue tumours by Dr Sandhya Sundaram, MD (Path), DNB (Path), MNAMS, Professor and Head, Department of General Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospitals, Chennai. It was an highly interactive session with an enthusiastic audience, guiding through every soft tissue lesion in children with emphasis on key diagnostic features and a systematic approach to any soft tissue tumour. 

The afternoon session involved facilitator mediated small group interactive slide viewing. The event was well received as many pathologies that students usually come across only in text books were available for them to learn, understand and remember. On the whole, it was a never before never after slide and smear viewing experience.

The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology, Saveetha Dental College, SIMATS celebrated world health day on 7th April 2018. The celebration was started with an awareness rally with the participants of around 130, on “Universal  Health coverage, Everyone, Everywhere” , inaugurated by Dr, Deepak Nallasamy, Director of Academics.  Dr. Ganeshkumar Parasuraman, M. D., Scientist C, ICMR, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai has delivered a lecture on Challenges and Solutions to achieve Universal Health Coverage. Dr. Elizabeth Varakumari., M. D, from the Department of Community Medicine, Kilpauk Medical College and Hospitals, Chennai delivered a lecture on Universal Health Care in Rural India. The Speakers have enlightened the students with the theme “Universal  Health coverage, Everyone, Everywhere”. They inspired the young generation about the need of Health for all and emphasized their role in the society as health care professionals.

Edify- Department of Orthodontics

The department of orthodontics presented their edify in a stupendous manner. They came up with three different innovative teaching methodologies. 

Firstly the string art – an activity based teaching method using nails and threads on a wooden plank. They explained cephalometric planes and angles using this methodology.

The second innovative video was an activity using hologram. The educational video was projected using pyramid shaped glass to show a three dimensional view. They explained the tooth movement using this technology.

The third video was made using pencil sketches in a series to explain a concept. They used 73 sketches to depict the growth of the mandible.

Overall their edify presentation was a grandeur and the videos were a visual retreat and was both informative and entertaining. The director of academics Dr Deepak Nallaswamy appreciated the department and acknowledged that the department has set a new bench mark .

World Tuberculosis Day- 24th March 2018

Department of Microbiology organised an event on World TB day on 24th of March 2018 in the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital premises with the motto “Wanted: Leaders for a TB free World. You can make history. End TB”. The faculties organized an awareness campaign towards the tuberculosis threat among the faculties, visiting patients, technical staff and class IV servants. Banners and posters were displayed at various places in the college with the information about the motto for the year 2018, pathogenesis, treatment regimens, incidence rates and resistant scenario of TB.Also there was a guest lecture on TB awareness and epidemiology  by Dr.Bella Devaleenal,MBBS,DLO,MPH, Scientist, National Institute of Research in Tuberculosis [NIRT-ICMR]. Dr.A.S.Smiline Girija gave the introductory note about the scientific forum and welcomed the peer group. The speaker made a vibrant note on the recent strategies of TB treatment, prevention measures and the novel governmental plans to stop TB spread in the community. The highly interactive and informative session was ended with the vote of thanks by Mr.N.P.Muralidharan and Dr.R.V.Geetha felicitated the speaker with a memento.

 

Edify- Department of Periodontics

The season 4 Edify of the Department of Periodontics was presided by Dr R. Rajagopal, Advisor, SIMATS, Saveetha University and faculty from P.M.S Dental College and Hospital attended the event. The chief guest presented the awards for punctuality and workaholic which was a clean sweep by Dr Sheeja Varghese, HOD, Department of Periodontics. The theme of the Edify was ‘4 Seasons’ and it began with the department video showcasing the various achievements of the department of Periodontics over the four seasons in a calendar year. They include the various CDE programs and guest lectures organized by the department, various international and national conferences attended by the faculty and students, and guest lectured delivered by the faculty at national and international forums. 

The innovative educational videos were on niche topics such as trans-endothelial migration of neutrophils in periodontitis which was done by Dr Sankari and Dr Priyalochana and the decision-making for crown lengthening done by Dr Caroline and Dr Asha, was portrayed as animated videos. These videos were made with the focus to break down the difficult lessons for better understanding to the student community. Dr Radhika further elaborated about the individual achievements such as the UG examination results, patient statistics, award-winning post-graduate students and the research activities of the department. 

It ended on a fun-filled note with a game called ‘Guess the Perio Faculty’ and it engaged the audience with various clues given about the respective faculty. Dr R. Rajagopal appreciated the efforts of the department in preparing this edify and the guests from P.M.S Dental College also applauded the theme and innovations ending on a happy note.
