Clinical Importance of Pharyngeal Arches, Pouches and Clefts

Guest lectures are an integral part of the Academic training at Saveetha. Eminent Anatomists, Researchers as well as Doyens from the Academia are invited periodically to share their valuable knowledge about various topics in basic medical sciences and research. These programs serve as an ideal platform for the students to supplement their theoretical knowledge with first hand perspectives from some of the stalwarts of the Medical and Dental Education and also assists in updating their knowledge with current concepts.

Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College has organized a CDE program on the topic “Clinical Importance of Pharyngeal Arches, Pouches and Clefts” for the first year BDS students on 15th February, 2020 at 12.00pm, in Decennial Hall, Saveetha Dental College. The speaker of the event was Dr. M. Vijayalakshmi, MBBS., MS., Professor, Department of Anatomy, Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.

The program commenced with warm welcome address and introduction of the speaker to the gathering by Mrs. S. Sangeetha, Senior Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, SDCH. Prof. Dr. M. Vijayalakshmi is a very well experienced teacher first briefly and systematically explained about the development of the pharyngeal arches, pouches and clefts. The speaker categorized the topic, into developmental anatomy, structures derived from each pharyngeal arches, pouches and clefts and the associated congenital deformities. The topic was fascinating which made the students to listen and observe keenly about the various concepts explained by the guest speaker. The presentation contained various images on developmental anomalies on pharyngeal apparatus. The lecture session was very much knowledgeable and worthy for listening.

The speaker was felicitated by Mrs. M.S. Thenmozhi, Head of the Department. Dr. Lavanya Prathap, Assistant Professor, Department of Anatomy delivered the Vote of Thanks.
