International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8 ever year to commemorate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. On the International Women’s day, Department of Public health dentistry join hands with Women empowerment cell, Saveetha dental college, conducted an awareness programme for women at KH Exports,Sennerkuppam on oral health and also created awareness about Breast cancer focusing on the simple examination procedures for early detection of the cancer. An awareness speech was given about the importance of oral health for women stressing about the hormonal imbalance during pregnancy, puberty and menopause.
National Dentists Day
March 6 is observed as National Dentists day and to celebrate this day Department of Public Health Dentistry organized awareness program in Saveetha satellite centre, Thirumazhasai, Chennai.
The main purpose was to raise awareness about the oral disease among patients. Always people avoid dental visits because of nervousness and anxiety which leads to major oral health issues. Dental caries and periodontal diseases are public health problem in India. Points highlighted during the program were structure of tooth, causes, management and prevention of dental caries, periodontal disease, malocclusion, oral cancer and maintenance of oral health. We also distributed free tooth brushes and tooth pastes to the gathered patients.Therefore National Dentists day was celebrated to increase public awareness on periodic dental visits and dental health issues.
SPARC 2018
The third edition of Saveetha’s Pedodontic Advanced Revision Course was organised by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry on 1st and 2nd of March, 2018. Dean, Dr.N.D.Jayakumar inaugurated the event by lighting the Kuthuvilakku. Eminent speakers from Chennai and other states shared their knowledge by delivering lectures in various topics such as Pulp therapy, Interceptive Orthodontics, Child Psychology and Behavior Management. Delegates from eight different dental colleges from Chennai, Andra Pradesh and Salem attended the program and found it to be very informative. Professor Dr.Deepa conducted a crossword puzzle for the participants and the winners were appreciated with certificates.
Rare Disease Day
Rare Disease Day is an observance held on the last day of February to raise awareness for rare diseases and improve access to treatment and medical representation for individuals with rare diseases and their families. It was established in the year 2008
As a part of Institutional social responsibility, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Saveetha dental college organized a campaign on 28th February 2018 on the occasion of Rare disease day. Rare Disease Day 2018 offers participants the opportunity to be part of a global call on policy makers, researchers, companies and healthcare professionals to increasingly and more effectively involve patients in rare disease research.
As a part of the campaign free oral health screening camp was conducted at Sri Padmavathi Amma aged home, Chennai. Awareness on rare was raised among the participants with the help of videos. Importance of research and policy making on these diseases were explained.
Role of zinc in type-2 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis
CDE programme was conducted on 24.11.2018 by Department of Biochemistry for the topic “Role of zinc in type-2 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis” which was delivered by Dr. D.S Pushparani, Assistant professor, Department of Biochemistry, SRM dental College and Hospitals, Chennai, India. There were 91 under graduates who attended the programme. She enlightened the audience about the direct relation between the risks and complications of diabetes and periodontitis and outlined the features that govern the interrelationship between zinc and diabetes mellitus with periodontal disease, including the physiologic mechanisms and clinical studies with scientific evidences. She correlated the importance of zinc and its protective effect for the treatment for periodontitis who suffer from type-2 diabetes mellitus with her research findings. Her simple explanatory talk was very useful to the budding dentists and they were able to interact with the speaker effectively with relevance to mechanism of action therapeutic action of zinc for periodontitis with diabetes. The talk was very impressive, novel and informative to the students as well as to the faculty members.
GAIN WITH NO PAIN-Full mouth rehabilitation under general anaesthesia
Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry conducted aCDE program on Full mouth rehabilitation under general Anaesthesiaaptly titled“Gain with no Pain” emphasising the unique feature of the procedure on14-2-2018.
The course was inclusive of both lecture series and hands on workshop and was certified with five DCI credit points.
The course was attended by 24 participants including general practitioners,undergraduate students and Pedodontic postgraduates.
Participants enjoyedthe enriching real time experience of treating patients under general anaesthesia that was arranged by the team of experts.
Anesthesiologists Dr.Navaneetha Krishnan and Dr.Rathna gave in depth information regarding the preoperative assessment of patient for general anaesthesia and the importance of informed consent .Their prompt andtimely explanation regarding the anaesthetic procedures added special value to the program andequipped the participants with vital information and knowledge .
Dr.G.Deepa in her interactive session spoke about the indications of General Anaesthesia for dental treatment of children and the post operative care needed for the child after the treatment under general anaesthesia is concluded.
Dr.Kanthaswamy briefed the participants about the complications that could arise during and after General anaesthesia.
Dr.Mahesh and Dr.Geomani apart from supervising the treatment done to the children provided their guidance and valuable information to participants about the proceedings in the operation theatre.
The one of its kind hands on programme instilled greatconfidence to participants to recommend general anaesthesia as a treatment modality for patients requiring multiple dental procedures
11th Convocation- Saveetha Institute of Medical & Technical Sciences
A decade since Saveetha University was established and grooming better every year. We compete with us and win ourselves year after year. The proof was the 11th convocation held on 22nd February 2018. 4 Doctor of Science, 41 Doctorate and 13 Gold Medals and this is all a part of students graduating this year. The feather to the crown is our Chief Guest Honorable Vice President of India Mr. Venkaiya Naidu.
Sir was generous to grace the occasion and we had a proud moment. He addressed the gathering and inspired the students with all his energy. He emphasized on learning mother tongue, education, future India, Make in India, Digital India and many other things thereby engraving in young minds the importance of service to the Nation.
Edify Department of Public Health Dentistry
The fourth round of edify for Department of Public Health Dentistry was held on 15th of February 2018. The Edify started with highlighting the department’s Academic achievements in the last one year. This included the UG and PG attendance, as well as pass percentages and Preventive procedure counts done in the specified time period. Apart from the routine data regarding the publications, Conferences and work shops attended / conducted; three specific accomplishments were shared. The first was compilation of the monographs done by the undergraduate students in to a text book, which has been accepted to be published by ‘Blue Rose Publishers’. By this, 51 UG students would be recognized as contributors for the book. The second accomplishment was, formulation of Nano hydroxy apatite crystals in a more cost effective way. We thought sharing this knowledge in a common platform would enable interested researcher to utilize it in future projects. Third was, selection of scientific paper by our final year post graduate student to be presented in “ANVESHAN 2018” conference, where more than 25 universities all over India have been expected to participate.
The second part of the presentation was on innovative videos by the Department of Public Health Dentistry. Totally three videos were played for the audience. First video was a documentary titled ‘A day in dental public health’, which highlighted on how DPH works behind the scenes to create awareness regarding public issues and instills good oral health habits. Second video was also an awareness video in Tamil, titled “Cancer”. It was created with daily wage workers and construction workers in mind, since they form majority of the working class people with high prevalence of malignant and premalignant conditions. Third was innovative teaching video, for undergraduate students. It was done on “Non probability Sampling technique”. The concept was decoded and made simple with daily life examples, for better understanding application by the students. The third part of the presentation was on camps and out reach activities by the department. The total number of camps, the beneficiaries, the health days celebrated, the status of the current MOU’s signed and upcoming MOU’s were highlighted. Before the meeting concluded, final remarks on progress of the long term follow up camps in “Mahatma Gandhi School” and “Don GuanellaSchool for differently abled children” were briefed out by the head of the department.
MASTER CLASS LECTURE SERIES IN CBCT IMAGING
The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Saveetha Dental College conducted a CDE programme on ‘MASTER CLASS LECTURE SERIES IN CBCT IMAGING’ on February 12th 2018. Professor Dr. Jie Yang who was the past president of American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) and the president of International Association of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology (IADMFR) delivered a guest lecture on ‘Interpretation of 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography’. Participants all over Tamil Nadu attended the CDE programme. The guest lecture by Dr.Jie Yang was very informative which elaborated about the interpretation of CBCT images by starting with normal anatomical structures in a CBCT image and further proceeding into the various pathological conditions such as cysts and tumour, their appearance and other characteristics of the condition. The programme concluded with an interactive discussion about CBCT interpretation with Dr.Yang where dentists of other specialities such as endodontics, oral surgery etc had a very informative discussion with Dr.Yang which aided many post graduates in acquiring knowledge on CBCT.
CLEFT AND CRANIOFACIAL PADIYANALLUR, CHENNAI 2017-2018
As part of Cleft and Craniofacial Centre in Saveetha we conduct screening camps for cleft children in Tamilnadu And Andhra Pradesh .We have also obtained an GO letter from Project Director To support our camps ,We meet health officials of most of the districts in tamilnadu and AP.
With help of their support we used to go for camp for camps and mobilise the patients on the same day or they used to send patients with some volunteers on regular basis every month .Apart from all these success won’t be possible with out the support of our management who has so kind heartedly and magnemously. Came forward to help these cosmetic and functionally affected cleft children from very poor socioeconomic background
We are providing Total free comprehensive cleft treatment which includes free investigations ,surgery,food,accommodation transport charges-for patients and two attendees,medicines,speech therapy, orthodontic treatment as well free ENT and prosthetic rehabilitation .
Our Aim is to bring Smile to these worried faces.

TMJ- Mystery Revealed
The Department of Orthodontics conducted a CDE programme “” TMJ- The mystery revealed”on 30th January 2018 which witnessed a humongous 287 participants from over 21 colleges from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu.
The programme had six intensive lectures from eminent speakers and unparalleled live demonstrations for the undergraduate students.
The event was a multidisciplinary one and the students actively enjoyed it.
The quiz programme embellished the event with 21 colleges fighting for the first prize and the Adhiparasakthi Dental College emerged as the winner while Thai Moogambikai dental College was the runner. They bagged a cash prize of 5000 and 3000 respectively.
The success of the programme was reflected by the great feedback from the students and there was a strong adjure for the next CDE edition of TMJ.
Edify- Department of Conservative Dentistry
The Cons-Endo 4th EDIFY was a tribute to the keen scientific head who proposed the heliocentric model. Keeping our Helios as Saveetha dental college, we do our best to stay in orbit and fulfil our duty towards our students, colleagues and our institution.
We had 3 educational videos explaining about the instrumentation movements , management of traumatic injuries and the use of laser disinfection in endodontics
“Crossword puzzle” that encourages our students to be attentive, awake and interested in the class there by making them learn better. Endo crown a treatment modality that rehabilitates the lost tooth structure of a patient gives a clear insight on treatments that are possible for a badly broken down tooth rather than extraction. With many awards won and presentations made the department of consendo are proud to share the achievements and knowledge that is being shared.
Tooth Ache Day
Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is a breakdown of teeth due to acids made by bacteria. The cavities may be a number of different colors from yellow to black. If the decay is left untreated it may lead to pain and difficulty in eating. The best way to avoid tooth decay is to keep our teeth and gums as healthy as possible. Hence an awareness program was conducted at Government Middle School, Nemili on 9th February, 2018 to raise awareness regarding dental caries which eventually causes tooth ache among school children. Images of caries progression were shown to the children. Proper brushing technique was demonstrated to them and then the students were asked to demonstrate the technique themselves. A total of 50 students were benefited.
World Cancer day
As a part of Institutional social responsibility, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Saveetha dental college organized “Oral Cancer awareness campaign” on 4th February 2018 on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease.
As a part of the campaign free oral health screening camp was conducted at Pudukuppam, Chennai. Cancer awareness was raised among the participants with the help of videos. Raising awareness against use of tobacco products was also done a part of the campaign.
Edify- Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery presented their edify today. They had 3 teaching videos, a credit course and 2 CDE programmes to their credit. They also had 2 MoUs to their credit. Their faculty and students have a wide array of achievements. One PhD, 2 fellowships around 10 guest lectures, 31 publications, 8 patents, 26 awards and so on... They have two CDE programme in plan which will be excecuted as successful as the previous one.
World Leprosy Day Program
An awareness program was organized in V.P.U Elementary School, Iayyapa Nagar for the children on 30th January on the event of “World Leprosy Day”. The children were educated on how to identify the lesion, how to prevent and protect themselves from the disease. They were also told about the effects of the disease on oral health and how to maintain oral hygiene. A total of 50 students were benefited from the awareness program
Orbit 2k18: Orbital trauma Workshop for Postgraduates
Orbit 2k18, a CDE program on the management of Orbital trauma was held on 24th and 25th January, 2018. The program included a lecture series, Live surgical demonstration and a Hands-on workshop of handling orbital trauma. It aimed at updating various aspects of orbital trauma such as Clinical Examination, Investigations and its recent advances, and various surgical techniques to Maxillofacial practitioners and post-graduation students.
The program was inaugurated by our Director of Academics, Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy and Presided over by our Dean, Dr. N.D. Jayakumar. Dr. Andrew Edwards was the Guest of Honour.
The panel of speakers included International and National faculties in the fields of Maxillofacial Surgery and Ophthalmology, who are experts in handling Orbital trauma. The first day was a lecture series that covered all aspects of Orbital trauma.
The second day of the program started with a live surgical demonstration of a case of orbital trauma. This was followed by a Hands-on workshop, where skull models with fractured orbital bones and full armamentarium of instruments and implants were given to the participants to have a real feel of surgically treating orbital fractures.
The program received a whopping attendance and the participants were thrilled with the knowledge and experience they gained.
MFDS Examination
The MFDS Examinations, Part II, held by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow was conducted at saveetha Dental College. The Examiners meet was held on 26th January, 2018 in our Conference Hall. The examination was held on 27th and 28th, January 2018 in the Royal College Examination Hall at Saveetha dental College, under the supervision of Prof. Andrew Edwards, The Director of Dental Examinations for The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow.
There were 10 Examiners including Dr. Abdul Wahab and Dr. Madhulaxmi, from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. The exams started by 9 am and concluded by 3pm on both the days. Prof. Andrew Edwards was happy with the arrangements and support given by our college for conducting the exams without any hindrance. All the examiners also gave a positive feedback on the venue and the arrangements made for the exam.
Oral & Maxillofacial Imaging for General Dental Practitioners
The spring rings its bells. Yes, the Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology in association with IDA Thiruvallur had an august gathering of around 100 dental practitioners for their CDE programme. Oral & Maxillofacial Imaging for General Dental Practitioners.
Four lectures followed by an hands on for the practitioners and postgraduates across specialities to impart the knowledge on imageology amongst them was a dream for any radiologist and we did it with great joy.
