CLEFT 2K18

Saveetha cleft and craniofacial institute conducted a CDE program on 28.08.18 and 29.08.18. CLEFT 2K18 was an interdisciplinary meeting on the management of cleft deformities. The program included lecture series and live surgical workshop. The event was inaugurated by our Dean, Dr N.D Jayakumar in the presence of the guest speaker Dr.Luiz Andre Pimenta, Dental Director, Craniofacial centre, University of North Carolina. Faculties and students from various colleges actively participated in the program with a registration of 160 participants. Speakers from various specialties including Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, Prosthodontics and Orthodontics gave interactive lectures. The live surgical workshop demonstrated two primary cleft surgery cases including one cleft lip and one cleft palate closure surgeries.

The department has been able to perform nine cleft surgeries in the month of August with the immense support of our director who has provided all the financial and material needs for this initial takeoff.

Australian Program

The Australian Programme course was conducted on the month of August 2018. This continuing education programme provided a comprehensive review of dental implantology with hands on programme for 10 participants from Australian. All the participants received one to one mentorship with 12 implants placement in live patients. Extensive lecture casts for an hour followed by surgical implant placement was carried out in one weeks duration.

HAND INSTRUMENTS IN OPERATIVE DENTISTRY – A GUEST LECTURE

Operative dentistry requires exceptional operator skills and various precise operative instruments to carryout successful treatments. Dentists must have thorough knowledge of the purpose and the application of these instruments in day to day dental practice. This lecture enlightened the participants regarding the availability of instruments, its application, purpose and manner of hand instruments use in operative dentistry.

ICRAB-2018

The Department of Pharmacology, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, SIMATS, Chennai in association with International Journal of Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences (IJRPS) has organized an INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON RECENT ADVANCES IN BIOMEDICINE (ICRAB-2018) on August 23rd 2018. The conference was allocated with 4 credit points (Reference number 152/18) by the Tamil Nadu Dental Council. Three eminent speakers have delivered invited lectures on various topics. Dr. Prithiviraj, Department of Toxicology and Pharmacology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China has enriched the delegates with the talk on “Novel anticancer drugs from regenerative animals”. Dr. Pragasam V, Professor, Renal Research Lab, School of Bio-Science and Technology, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, delivered a talk on “Biomedicine in CAUTI” and Dr. P. Ravi Shankar, Professor, Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, Associate Dean (Curriculum and Quality assurance), American International Medical University, Beausejour, Gros Islet, Saint Lucia Biomedicine about “Current drugs in Diabetes”. A total number of 84 delegates from various institutions have participated in the conference and 37 of them presented e-posters. Four Best e-Posters were awarded. The abstracts of the presentation will be published in Scopus indexed International Journal of Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Micro Endodontics

The IACDE Pre Conference Workshop 2018 on “Micro Endodontics” was held
on 9 th August 2018. Lecture on “An insight into the modern dental practice” was
delivered by Dr.Sindhu Ramesh. It focused upon the modern era of Endodontics
the quality or the success that has been enhanced with the help of magnification,
Dr.Pradeep delivered a lecture on “ Ergonomics and Principles of a micro
Endodontics” and Dr.Subash delivered a lecture on “ Evidence based discussion
on Micro Endodontics”. Overall the lectures were very informative. Live demo
on Patients and Hands On by the participants lighted upon their focus towards
micro Endodontics.

CDE on Comprehensive Management of Oral Cancer

The Saveetha Oral Cancer Institute ( SOCI) associated with Saveetha Dental College , conducted a one day CDE on the comprehensive management of oral cancer on the 18 th Saturday of August 2018. 

The event was kickstarted by a welcome speech by Dr MR Muthusekhar , Head of Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Several speakers from renowned institutions and hospitals across Chennai were invited , in-fact 17 speakers in total . The CDE aimed to showcase the multidisciplinary support needed for cancer care and was targeted to the post graduates in specialities of oral surgery, oral medicine, oral pathology and prosthodontics. The highlight of the event was a key note by renowned oral surgeon Dr George paul who gave an oration on his 25 years of experience dealing with oral cancer patients. The program culminated with a quiz program for the post graduates in which 45 students participated with the first prize going to Dr Yash, an oral oncology fellowship student from Karpaga Vinayaka dental college and the runner up being dr ishwarya from GDC, a postgraduate student in oral medicine. Dr Rinku George Head of oral oncology , gave the vote of thanks .

MANAGEMENT OF ENDODONTIC COMPLICATIONS – CASE DISCUSSION

Department of conservative dentistry and endodontics, saveetha dental college conducted lecture on management of complications during endodontic treatment. Complications can occur during diagnosis, access preparation, cleaning and shaping, obturation and post-space preparation. Those who perform root canal therapy must have a basic knowledge of etiologic factors and methods of prevention as well as recognition, management and prognosis. This programme enhanced the participants to get a thorough knowledge on prevention and management of endodontic complications that occur during the course of treatment.

IVOCLAR TEETH SETTING-BPS TECHNIQUE-2018 OCTOBER

A 2day clinical and laboratory demonstration for bio functional prosthetic system for 1st MDS prosthodontic postgraduates. Dr. Lingeshwaran gave a demonstration of diagnostic impression, intraoral tracing and final impression using bps system. A laboratory demonstration of teeth arrangement was shown with a clinical and laboratory correlation of how to proceed with a complete denture case using the BPS system by ivoclar vivadent.

Ridge augmentation for implant placement & Management of periimplantitis

The department of Periodontics in association with the office of International affairs organised a guest lecture  on Ridge augmentation and management of Peri- implantitis on 7th August 2018. The Speaker Dr.Sirisha Munimadugu is a Master of Science in Dentistry (Periodontics) from the Texas A & M College of Dentistry,USA. The lecture was an interactive one with case discussions and had 35 participants form the Departments of Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Implantology

Evidence based discussion on Microscopic endodontics

The lecture was given by Dr. Subash Sharma on 9 th August 2018. Evidenced based discussion on Microscopic Endodontics gave an insight on the reasons for emphasizing the use of Microscopes. An evidence based discussion always gives a reliable and the need for such treatment modality to be provided. Microscopes are not considered as luxury anymore but a requirement to provide good quality endodontic treatment.

Alumni Meet- 2018

Saveetha Dental College Alumni meet celebration held in our institution on 5th Aug 2018. It also, marks the Silver Jubilee Celebration of 1993 batch.

Dr.N.M.Veeraiyan, Founder-Chancellor, Saveetha University, presided over the function. He enthralled all by focusing on alumni welfare and expressed his happiness over meeting all our alumni in thisalumni meet. He also, highlighted on the advanced infrastructural facilities which have been added in our institution year by year.

Dr.Deepak Nallasamy, Director of Academics, Saveetha University elaborated on the steps, the institution is taking for betterment of our students and dental healthcare delivery system for Indian Scenario. He also, highlighted on the dentist population ratio in comparison with developed countries and unfolded the opportunities which are still available.

Dr.N.D.Jayakumar, Dean, Saveetha Dental College shared his memories with our alumni during their student period. 

    The alumni expressed their gratitude to their teachers by felicitating them. They shared their golden memories in the institution. The teachers felt over-whelmed and enjoyed the function. The teachers also expressed their memories of interaction with 1993 batch. Alumni belonging to various batches shared their evergreen moments with 1993 Batch.

    The function reached the melting point when each alumni from 1993 batch emotionally expressed their lifestyle and relationship with the institution during their study period and shared their current status.

Their heart skipped a beat, when they witnessed the infra-structure facilities existing currently in our institution. 

1993 Batch proudly announced their contribution of Zen garden to our institution as a token of their holistic relationship with our institution. 

Not only, their physical bodies got refreshed but also their inner being refreshed so much after visiting their “Temple of Learning”.

IADR - HAT-TRICK

Saveetha Dental College uplifts Students and Faculty members every year to show case their research projects as Paper and Poster presentation. They not only show avid participation in National conferences, but also encouraged to participate in International Forum as well. For the past 3 consecutive years, Saveetha students and Faculties participated in International Association of Dental Research (IADR) conference held at Switzerland, Seoul and San-fransisco. This year, we stand proud to say that our students and Faculty members participated in 96th General Session and Exhibition of the IADR as well as in World Dental and Oral Health Congress (International CPD Accredited), Annual International Conference and Exhibition on Dental & Oral Health held at London, United Kingdom. 

International Association for Dental Research (IADR), 96th General Session and Exhibition in conjunction with Pan European Regional Congress which was held on July 25-28th, 2018 at  Excel London Convention Center, UK. The purpose of this conference is to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health worldwide; to support and represent the oral health research community; and to facilitate the communication and application of research findings. .  A total of 38 dental students and 10 Faculty members from Saveetha Dental college, SIMATS participated in the conference.

Ridge augmentation and management of Peri- implantitis

IACDE NATIONAL CONGRESS:LECTURE ON ROOT CANAL IRRIGATION

Eradication of microflora in the treatment of pulpal and periapical diseases is the crucial step in assuring the successs of endodontic therapy. It is evident that instrumentation alone doesnot render bacteria free root canal system, henceforth irrigants play an very important role in eradicating the microorganisms from the root canal system. This lecture highlighted the importance of irrigants, newer trends in irrigation devices and the irrigants available. It helped the participants to gain knowledge regarding the recent advances in irrigation protocols and imply them in their clinical practice.  

RECENT TRENDS IN TAD’S

The workshop held on 17.07.2018 at our institution aimed at providing knowledge to PG students regarding the use of TADS in orthodontics. Temporary Anchorage Devices, is one of the latest innovations in orthodontics and has really increased or broadened the vista of orthodontics and has expanded our treatment procedures. Some cases which were surgical, can now be done non-surgical using TADS. This workshop on TADS provided an insight of various new skeletal anchorage devices available including the IZC and Buccal shelf implants.

Guest speaker, Dr S.Venkateshwaran and Dr Venkataeshwara Rao are few among the most renowned orthodontist with keen interest in the field of mini implants. Valuable knowledge had been provided to the students by our speakers about the use of IZC and Buccal Shelf implants.

World Population Day

World Population Day

World Population Day is a global health awareness day which is observed on July 11th every year to raise awareness on global population issues. While press interest and general awareness in the global population surges only at the increments of whole billions of people, the world population increases by 100 million approximately every 14 months. The world population reached 7,400,000,000 on February 6, 2016; the world population had reached 7,500,000,000 at around 16:21 on April 24, 2017.

On the event of World Population day, Department of Public Health Dentistry, Saveetha Dental College, conducted an awareness programme on the rise of population of India day by day and its effect on oral health .Emphasis was made on the insufficient dentist: population ratio and the role of teachers in taking care of children’s oral health. Proper teeth brushing techniques were demonstrated to the teachers so that they can teach the students and assess their performance. Free dental screening camp for the school children was also conducted simultaneously.

National Doctor’s Day

National Doctor’s Day is celebrated every year on July 1. The day is marked to recognize the contributions of physicians to the community and create a link with the community for joining hands towards Health for All.

The Department of Public Health conducted an interactive session with medical professionals and students at Saveetha Medical celebrate to celebrate this perfect day for spreading knowledge on the significance of oral health status contributing to overall general health.

A lively session commenced with oral hygiene practices followed by them and then it focused on importance of preserving dentition, mechanism of dental problems occurrence, prevention of oral disease. Information about various available treatment modalities were delivered in a gist followed by discussion on giving effective oral hygiene instructions to patients.

Emphasis was made on early approaches for a good oral health status and the importance of timely referral by medical professionals to dentists was highlighted. They were encouraged to perform roles enabling dental professional to administer preventive and minimal invasive procedures.

LAYERS OF BEAUTIFICATION ON COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS

Composite resins occupy a paramount position among restorative cements as they have excellent esthetic potential acceptable longevity, with a much lower cost comparatively. Methods to upgrade efficiency and speed of their placement should be incorporated with the objective of long-lasting and properly formed restorations. This lecture and hands on demonstrates meticulous operative technique along with appropriate case selection to govern the success of resin composite restoration. Participants were enlightened regarding the different layering techniques and the appropriate shade selection methods for anterior restorations.
