“Neurobiology of Addiction”

Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College has organized a Guest Lecture entitled “Neurobiology of Addiction” for I year BDS students on 27th October 2018 at 12.00pm. The Speaker for the Guest lecture was Dr. Yogesh Kanna Sathyamoorthy, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, Christ University, Bangalore. Dr. M. Karthik Ganesh, Senior Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, gave the welcome address and introduced the speaker to the gatherings. The lecture started and the speaker gave the basic introduction on the neurobiology of addiction for First year BDS students. The speaker addressed the future dentists whose life’s work is to deal with a repertoire of patients, patients with a varying history of substance abuse. The session had a slow start as usual and then picked up the pace. Students were enthusiastically listening and involved in the discussion. The lecture also dealt with stress and coping mechanism and stress in an integral component in any dental college student. The reason why students can impulsive was dealt in the lecture and it brought a big smile to teachers and students as well. It is surprising to see that, a few students already had some knowledge about what the speaker was lecturing and hence it made more and more sense to them. He gave a thorough neurobiological mechanism and pathway of brain by the impact of various addictive habits which bypasses and suppresses the routine regular neuronal circuitry of brain function. He also quoted various day-to-day student life activities of addictive behaviours in the present scenario of adolescent age. On the whole, the speaker mentioned as it was a pleasant experience for him to talk to a bunch of enthusiastic budding dental surgeons. Dr. Yogesh Kanna Sathyamoorthy, was felicitated and presented with gifts by Mrs. M. S. Thenmozhi, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy. Dr. Dinesh Premavathy, Lecturer, from the Department of Anatomy, delivered the vote of thanks.
