Six Basic Medical Sciences Departments, two dental specialities- Oral Medicine and Radiology & Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology. 609 research papers, 21 judges, around 65 peer judges. The judges and peer judges were dump stuck looking at our students work. What more can our students do to make us proud.

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Thursday, 28th December 2017 between Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Chennai, India and American International Medical University, Gros Islet, Saint Lucia. SIMATS offers courses in a variety of disciplines ranging from , Dentistry ,Medicine, allied health,nursing ,Engineering ,Law and Management while American International Medical University offers courses in medicine and nursing.  The Memorandum was signed by Dr Deepak Nallaswamy, Director of Academics on behalf of SIMATS and by Dr P Ravi Shankar, the Associate Dean of Medicine on behalf of American International Medical University. The Associate Dean for International Affairs at Saveetha Dental College & Hospitals  Ms T Lakshmi facilitated the process. 

The MoU provides the framework for cooperation and collaboration between the two universities. Among the proposed areas of academic collaboration are faculty exchange, student exchange, research collaboration and collaborating on projects with other universities as and when required. Both parties also agreed to explore the possibility of working together (along with other universities) to offer certificate level online courses to students in various areas. 

Following the signing of the MOU, Dr Shankar, an honorary visiting faculty at Saveetha Dental College facilitated CDE Programme with two Interactive sessions .The first session was on ‘Misconceptions and misuse of medicines in developing countries’ while the second session was on ‘Health humanities’. Dr Shankar also facilitated a faculty development session on ‘Self-directed learning’ on Friday, 29th December 2017. It is hoped that the signing of the MOU will set the stage for initiating academic and research collaboration between the two universities. 

Edify-Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology

Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, presented their 4th Edition Edify.

They presented 2 educational videos which was an animation and maniqquine challenge, 1 motivational video on book reading and 1 community outreach programme video. They spoke on their department report which was very impressive. They had numerous national and international publications. 1 MoU, 1 CDE programme to their credit. Also they have published their second volume of IJFO. They had 10 awards to their credit participated in about 15 conferences with two international conference participation by Dr. M.Arvind and Dr.M.Subha. 

Dr. Jayanth received workaholic and punctuality award. 

Their future plans include 2 multi centric clinical trials. 2 CDE programmes in January and February respectively. Indian Oral Cancer Conference in March.

Overall, Director and Dean appreciated the effort by the faculty of the department and the department received a standing ovation.

Webinar- MiniSrews in Orthodontics

The department of Orthodontics in association with the office of international affairs, conducted a webinar by Dr Ahmed Abouelnour, from the Dept of Orthodontics, Faculty of dental medicine, Al-Azhar University, Egypt. He is also our adjunct faculty in Department of Orthodontics, Saveetha Dental College. He presented the webinar on “mini-implant intrusion” on   09/01/2017 from 12:30 - 01:30 PM, at the Decennial hall, Saveetha Dental College, Chennai. The webinar was attended by all the orthodontic post graduates, fellows & the Faculties. The webinar was very informative & useful for all our students. This is the first step towards many such webinar’s.

 

Local Drug Delivery System- A Perio -Pharm Interaction

The inaugural edition of the Pharm-Perio Interactions started off with the new year fervour on January 5th, 2018 at the Decennial Hall in Saveetha Dental College. The dynamic relationship between the departments of Periodontics and Pharmacology and the efforts to bridge the knowledge for the student community resulted in the culmination of this CDE program. The inauguration function was presided over by the chief guests and speakers for the day, Dr. Sheba Rani Nakka David, Programme Leader- Pharmacy (PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences) and Dr M.S.Ramasamy, Scientist-KBC Research Centre, MIT Campus, Anna University. The welcome address was delivered by Dr N.D.Jayakumar, Dean and HOD-Department of Periodontics, vote of thanks by Dr Anitha Roy, HOD-Department of Pharmacology and the whole program was helmed by the efforts of Mrs.T. Lakshmi, Associate Dean of International Affairs, Saveetha Dental College.

Dr Sheba Rani deliberated on the trending topic in the field of Periodontics i.e., advancement in local drug delivery systems in dentistry and briefed on the various research opportunities available in this field at the Univerisiti Brunei Darussalam. Dr M.S.Ramasamy took to the stage on the debatable topic of fostering Indian medicine to the next generation and concluded that this is an ever expansive field with vast potential for research. The e-posters were presented by student delegates and the winners were announced at the valedictory function.

From 1899, the Company has grown to become the largest professional dental products company in the world.The Company distributes its dental products in over 120 countries under some of the most well established brand names in the dental industry.By signing the MOU with Dentsply we are being given the opportunity to make use of their products and make ourselves updated. This would help us to conduct more workshops and CDE programs by which the knowledge obtained is also shared with others. Thereby not just benefiting to ourselves but also sharing it with others there by making education and knowledge available to all.

Edify- Department of Pharmacology

The EDIFY season 4 meet of the Department of Pharmacology was held on 04/01/18.The Edify started with a Social Video followed by that, The Director of Academics, Dr. Deepak Nallaswamy  had presented the Workaholic Award and Punctuality Award to Dr.D. Ezhilarasan .The Department team show cased two innovative animation videos. One video was a Social Awareness Video about Drugs in Pregnancy and the second one was mechanism of action of Antiretroviral drugs. The faculty presented their academic achievements in terms of Results, Publications,  Cumulative Google Scholar citation and DCI credit points, Conference attended by Staff and Students, different Awards and positions received by the faculty for the academic year . 

                    The department could achieve 99% results with 69 distinctions and more 90 % students got more than 70% marks in  academic year 2017.The department has conducted many scientific programmes such as International conferences, workshops. seminars, CME and guest lectures and were also part of faculty development program. The journey of Pharmacology department was greatly appreciated in university level as the department   become the second best department in university level which was appreciated in 30th founders day and also as the best Basic Medical Department in Insignia 2017Two guests, Prof .Dr. M .Saravanan PhD from MakelleUniversity , Ethiopia and Dr Sheeba Rani Nakka David ,Ph D, Programmr Leader –Pharmacy, Universiti Brunei , Darussalam  also attended the edify programme. The Edify meet was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr Anitha Roy.

Prof Dr Saravanan .M represented Mekkle university and exchanged MoU with the Director of Academics Dr Deepak Nallaswamy ,SIMATS .

The main goal of the MoU is student –Faculty exchange  ,Internship programme ,Collaborative research projects and Joint publications ,Joint conferences ,symposium and applying funded projects to govt .funding agencies and few NGO ,Industrial sector etc.,

The Purpose of the MoU includes faculty-student exchange and collaborative research like exchange of academic, scientific, historical and research publications and literature in areas of approved mutual collaboration.

The institutions can jointly decide to explore possibilities of developing joint or collaborative research in fields of mutual interest. Such collaborative research may include seminars leading to publications, field work for joint research projects, laboratory attachment with waived bench fees, and short courses.

Dr Sheba David ,Programme leader of pharmacy ,Universiti Brunei Darussalam delieverd lecture on the topic Interactive Lecture –Boon or Bane on 4/8/2018. Interactive lectures , discussion and activities were given to the faculty concluding  interactive lectures are boon .She also discussed about the funded projects done in her university and interacted with the faculties for initiating combined research for Nano ,Local drug delivery especially with Department of Periodontics and Pharmacology.Over all the Lecture was good and few take home messages were given to the participants .32 faculties attended the programme and benefitted .

Guest Lecture-National University Singapore: Maternal factors induced epigenetic changes alter brain development

Prof.Dr.Thameem Dheen ,Head ,Department of Anatomy, and Associate Dean undergraduate programme ,Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS) visited Saveetha Dental College & Hospitals on December 15th 2017.He delivered an interactive guest lecture on Maternal factors induced epigenetic changes alter brain development in offspring to the dental undergraduate and post graduate students. Around 90 participants attended the lecture and benefitted .This programme was organized by Associate Dean International affairs ,Saveetha Dental College and coordinated by Department of Anatomy ,SDCH.

Associate Dean of International affairs visited Hisar -Haryana agricultural university for an international Symposium cum Discussion on Collaborations with various international University  on 3rd and 4th December 2017.

Michigan State university .Prof Dr Karim Merdia, University of Illinois Prof Dr .Vijay Singh and Prof Dr Kent D Rausch , Washington state university Prof.Dr Kulvinder gill and Research Scientist Dr Krishna Kumar Sugumaran from Kuwait institute of Scientific research were present in the MoU and student exchange programme discussion .

The honourable Vice chancellor of Hisar Haryana Agricultural university and Prof .Dr.Samunder Singh , Dean International affairs gave a warm welcome for the interactive sessions and particularly for the collaboration with international and national university at the symposium .

On this occasion Saveetha Dental and engineering college inked an MoU with Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research for various scientific collaboration on December 4th 2017 .

 

Periodontics-Interactions

The Department of Periodontics ended the year on a memorable note by organizing the ninth edition of its popular CDE Program Perio-Interactions, held on the 20th of December 2017 at the Decennial Hall in Saveetha Dental College. The program was developed to offer a unique opportunity to both mentors and their students to discuss and debate controversial yet challenging paradigms in the dynamic field of Periodontics. This year the event was particularly relevant across the national spectrum, wherein upcoming and promising faculty from various dental colleges in south India holistically approached key areas of periodontal etiopathogenesis and therapy. Prof. Dr. Bagavad Gita, Head of the Department of Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital and her  student Dr. Ann V. George inaugurated the session with the current and future perspective of the role of nutrigenomics in periodontics. Prof. Dr. S. Rajasekar, of Rajah Muthiah Dental College and Hospital and his post graduate student Dr. T. Preethi followed up from the previous lecture; elaborating on the evolution of the many models of periodontal pathogenesis and the possibility of a current consensus. The pre-lunch session was especially interactive as Prof. Dr. R. Viswa Chandra, (SVS Institute of Dental Sciences, Telangana) and his protégée  Dr. V. Vaishnavi showcased the various challenges and evidences of horizontal ridge augmentation with a kaleidoscope of cases ranging from block grafts, regenerative therapy and ridge expansion. Post lunch, Prof. Dr. R. Lalitha of Thai Moogambigai Dental College and Hospital and her student Dr. Neeharika provided an extensive review on the methods used to arrive at evidence based periodontal therapy. The final session helmed by Dr. Anupama Tadepalli, Reader at SRM Dental College and Hospital, Ramapuram and her student Dr.Devi Bala captivated the gathering with their robust discussion on the developmental strategies and scope of utilizing periodontal vaccines. Thirty e-posters based on the lectures were judged with winning posters being awarded to one post graduate in each category. The program was well received by the 100-odd participants and we now look forward to organizing the tenth edition of Perio-Interactions in the forthcoming academic year.

 

Simplified Aesthetics

The Continuing Dental Education programme on “Simplified Aesthetics- Managing fluorosis with minimal invasion” was held on 18th December 2017. It was lectured by Dr.Chris Chen. This enthralling lecture showcased on the orator’s skills in the form of clinical cases which engaged the audiences interest throughout. The primary focus was directed at bleaching materials and procedures and to arrive at a decisive planning regarding the same. An Australian Product “U Veneers” which is now being used world over was discussed about in detail. A wide array of the clinician’s techniques and expertise were spoken of which can be practised on a day to day basis.

 

Orthodontics- DAMON

The Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Saveetha Dental College in association with ORMCO, organized a 2 day CDE programme on the Damon System on the  14th and 15th December 2017. 

The course was conducted by Dr.C.S.Ramachandra, Principal and Head of department, Department of Orthodontics, AECS Maaruti Dental College, Bangalore. The course was attended by 45 participants that included post graduates and faculties from various colleges.

The programme was carefully structured to include the recent improvements in the Damon System with the help of Lectures, Case Discussions and Live Video demonstration of the bonding procedures for the cases discussed. The first day included lectures on the principle, workings of the Damon system and the availability of the different torque options. This was followed by display and detailed explanation of the mechanotherapy used in the cases treated by the course mentor using the Damon System.

The first half of the second day included case discussion and treatment planning for various cases in the department. This was later followed by live video demonstration of the bonding process using the Damon system in the cases that had been discussed earlier.

 The main take away of the course was the decision making process in identifying cases that require with brackets with increased torque. The Programme received positive reviews from the participants of the course. 

 

Edify- Department of Microbiology

Department of Microbiology presented their 4th edify on 21/12/2017. They presented 2 educational videos. One on dengue and its prevention and the other on the pathogenesis of anaphylaxis.

They also presented their department video which highlighted their department achievements like result, research projects, consultancy services , CDE programmes conducted, achieved and participated along with various awards won.

Edify- Department of General Pathology

Department of General Pathology presented their  4th Edify meet on 7.12.17. We presented our department activities as a video includes

 Next to that video we showed 2 innovative teaching videos on SPICULATED RBCS and HALLMARKS OF CANCER

Spiculated RBCs video was prepared by using 3D animation &Video edit.

For Hallmarks of Cancer Video we used Brushes app with cartoon art and X mirage airplay.

Both the videos were appreciated well.

Thus the Edify cycle 4 of General Pathology department was over by thanking all the well wishers.

Guest lecture and work shop on Maxillofacial Prosthesis

The workshop was conducted by Prof. P.C.Jacob …The lecture emphasized on the importance of fixed and removable oral and maxillofacial prosthesis and various stages of surgery as well as radiotherapy contemplated with the prosthesis. The speaker gave a brief introduction about immediate surgical stents and prosthesis.

There was a hands-on demonstration on obturators, guide flange, ocular, orbital, auricular,Finger and nose prosthesis and their mode of fabrication, with a keen focus on aesthetic camouflage and greater retention of the prosthesis.

It was a great learning curve where they reached to a greater depth of understanding in the importance and fabrication of maxillofacial prosthesis.

EASY TO SHAPE KIDS II

Easy to shape kids, A CDE programme was conducted by the Department of Pediatric and preventive Dentistry Saveetha Dental college. The CDE programme was attended by50 participants which included pediatric dentist and general dentist. Two lectures were given was delivered by Dr. Ganesh Jeevanandan and Dr. Madhusudhan. One lecture was on the root canal morphology of primary teeth and another on Rotary files in primary teeth.  The lecture was helpful for the pediatric dentist and general dentist to understand the morphology of primary teeth and the use of rotary files in primary teeth. There was an active interaction between the participants and mentors which resulted in positive feedback from the participant. 

11th INTERNATIONAL BDS STUDENTS SEMINAR ON BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES

11th INTERNATIONAL BDS STUDENTS SEMINAR ON BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES was organized by all the Basic Medical Science Departments as a joint effort to bring a confluence of knowledge of First and Second Year B.D.S., students in a Scientific forum. It was held on 9th December 2017 at Saveetha Dental College Totally around 470 students participated and presented paper and e-posters in all the 6 basic sciences departments. A scientific quiz was conducted in the evening. Best paper and poster awards for all the sessions was given away in the valedictory function. Priyadarshini dental college bagged the overall best college award.
