12th May is the birthday of Florence Nightinagle and is celebrated as International Nurse Day every year. Hence an awareness program was conducted for the nurses and the trainees of the Can Stop organisation at Madhavaram on 12th May, 2018 to raise awareness regarding the right to health of the patients and the nurses. The nurses were enlightened, using videos, about how to prevent needle stick injuries in the clinical set up. Also, oral hygiene instructions were demonstrated to them .At the end of the program toothbrushes and toothpastes were distributed to them.
Emerging trends in Nanotechnology
Department of Pharmacology has conducted a CDE on 28th April 2018 on Emerging trends in Nanodentistry. Dr. S. Rajeshkumar, Research Scientist, Nanotherapy Lab, School of Biosciences and Technology, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has given an extensive talk on nanoparticles and its biomedical Applications. He has extended his helping hand to prepare nanoparticles for the interested budding dentist.

Department of Anatomy, has organized a CDE program on “Current Concepts in Clinical Anatomy of Thyroid Gland with its Intriguing Anatomical Basis for Dentistry” for I year BDS students in Anatomy Lecture Hall on 27th April 2018 at 10.00am. The Speaker for the Guest lecture was Dr. C. S. Janaki, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy, Aasan Memorial Dental College, Chengalpet.
Mr. K. Yuvaraj Babu, Reader, Department of Anatomy introduced the speaker and the topic for the lecture to the august gathering of students and staffs of Saveetha Dental College.
Dr. C. S. Janaki was felicitated and presented with gifts by Mrs. M. S. Thenmozhi, Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy.
In her lucid lecture Dr. C. S. Janaki discussed elaborately about the basic anatomy of Thyroid gland, its coverings, relations and development. Each anatomical feature of Thyroid gland was connected and correlated with applied and clinical anatomy. The Speaker gave a special emphasis to the clinical conditions of basic anatomy and developmental anomalies with lots of Dental applications and correlations.

National safe motherhood day
he National Safe Motherhood Day (NSMD) is celebrated every year on April 11 to create awareness on proper healthcare and maternity facilities to pregnant and lactating women. It also seeks to create awareness about the institutional delivery, reducing anemia among women and better pre and post natal health care are necessary for mothers. The theme of 2018 NSMD was ‘Respectful Maternity Care’
Good dental or oral care is important for maintaining healthy teeth, gums and tongue. Women have special oral health requirements during the unique phases in their lives. Changes in female hormone levels during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause exaggerate the way gums react to plaque.
On the National safe motherhood day, Department of Public health dentistry, Saveetha dental college, conducted an awareness programme on oral health among women during pregnancy and also created awareness about how to take special care of oral hygiene during pregnancy. An awareness speech was given about the importance of oral health for women stressing about the hormonal imbalance during pregnancy.
HISTOPATHOLOGY SLIDE READING SERIES PART IV- “PAEDIATRIC ORAL PATHOLOGY”
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Saveetha Dental College conducted Histopathology Slide Series Part 4, Paediatric Oral Pathology on 5th April 2018. Diagnosis is very crucial for prompt treatment. This responsibility is even higher when dealing with a child, for every diagnosis affects the child physically, emotionally and socially. The CDE was conducted in order to make ourselves and our fellow oral pathologists adept in this area, and was was dedicated to the children of the world.
The first session was on Pediatric Dermatopathology, by Dr. Ramkumar Ramammoorthy MD, Consultant Dermatologist, Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust Hospital Chennai who brought in array of case scenarios with explicit focus on oral lesions in children. The second session was on Pediatric Hematology with special focus on Oral Cavity by Dr.Harshitha C.Mouli MD, DCH, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatric Hematology, Institute of Child health and Hospitals for Children, Egmore, Chennai. The session had case discussion of children with hematologic disorders, emphasizing on the oral presentation along with the the classical hematological findings in the blood smears.
The third session was on Pediatric soft tissue tumours by Dr Sandhya Sundaram, MD (Path), DNB (Path), MNAMS, Professor and Head, Department of General Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Hospitals, Chennai. It was an highly interactive session with an enthusiastic audience, guiding through every soft tissue lesion in children with emphasis on key diagnostic features and a systematic approach to any soft tissue tumour.
The afternoon session involved facilitator mediated small group interactive slide viewing. The event was well received as many pathologies that students usually come across only in text books were available for them to learn, understand and remember. On the whole, it was a never before never after slide and smear viewing experience.
World Health Day 7/4/2018
The Department of Pharmacology and Physiology, Saveetha Dental College, SIMATS celebrated world health day on 7th April 2018. The celebration was started with an awareness rally with the participants of around 130, on “Universal Health coverage, Everyone, Everywhere” , inaugurated by Dr, Deepak Nallasamy, Director of Academics. Dr. Ganeshkumar Parasuraman, M. D., Scientist C, ICMR, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai has delivered a lecture on Challenges and Solutions to achieve Universal Health Coverage. Dr. Elizabeth Varakumari., M. D, from the Department of Community Medicine, Kilpauk Medical College and Hospitals, Chennai delivered a lecture on Universal Health Care in Rural India. The Speakers have enlightened the students with the theme “Universal Health coverage, Everyone, Everywhere”. They inspired the young generation about the need of Health for all and emphasized their role in the society as health care professionals.
Edify- Department of Orthodontics
The department of orthodontics presented their edify in a stupendous manner. They came up with three different innovative teaching methodologies.
Firstly the string art – an activity based teaching method using nails and threads on a wooden plank. They explained cephalometric planes and angles using this methodology.
The second innovative video was an activity using hologram. The educational video was projected using pyramid shaped glass to show a three dimensional view. They explained the tooth movement using this technology.
The third video was made using pencil sketches in a series to explain a concept. They used 73 sketches to depict the growth of the mandible.
Overall their edify presentation was a grandeur and the videos were a visual retreat and was both informative and entertaining. The director of academics Dr Deepak Nallaswamy appreciated the department and acknowledged that the department has set a new bench mark .

World Tuberculosis Day- 24th March 2018
Department of Microbiology organised an event on World TB day on 24th of March 2018 in the Saveetha Dental College and Hospital premises with the motto “Wanted: Leaders for a TB free World. You can make history. End TB”. The faculties organized an awareness campaign towards the tuberculosis threat among the faculties, visiting patients, technical staff and class IV servants. Banners and posters were displayed at various places in the college with the information about the motto for the year 2018, pathogenesis, treatment regimens, incidence rates and resistant scenario of TB.Also there was a guest lecture on TB awareness and epidemiology by Dr.Bella Devaleenal,MBBS,DLO,MPH, Scientist, National Institute of Research in Tuberculosis [NIRT-ICMR]. Dr.A.S.Smiline Girija gave the introductory note about the scientific forum and welcomed the peer group. The speaker made a vibrant note on the recent strategies of TB treatment, prevention measures and the novel governmental plans to stop TB spread in the community. The highly interactive and informative session was ended with the vote of thanks by Mr.N.P.Muralidharan and Dr.R.V.Geetha felicitated the speaker with a memento.

Edify- Department of Periodontics
The season 4 Edify of the Department of Periodontics was presided by Dr R. Rajagopal, Advisor, SIMATS, Saveetha University and faculty from P.M.S Dental College and Hospital attended the event. The chief guest presented the awards for punctuality and workaholic which was a clean sweep by Dr Sheeja Varghese, HOD, Department of Periodontics. The theme of the Edify was ‘4 Seasons’ and it began with the department video showcasing the various achievements of the department of Periodontics over the four seasons in a calendar year. They include the various CDE programs and guest lectures organized by the department, various international and national conferences attended by the faculty and students, and guest lectured delivered by the faculty at national and international forums.
The innovative educational videos were on niche topics such as trans-endothelial migration of neutrophils in periodontitis which was done by Dr Sankari and Dr Priyalochana and the decision-making for crown lengthening done by Dr Caroline and Dr Asha, was portrayed as animated videos. These videos were made with the focus to break down the difficult lessons for better understanding to the student community. Dr Radhika further elaborated about the individual achievements such as the UG examination results, patient statistics, award-winning post-graduate students and the research activities of the department.
It ended on a fun-filled note with a game called ‘Guess the Perio Faculty’ and it engaged the audience with various clues given about the respective faculty. Dr R. Rajagopal appreciated the efforts of the department in preparing this edify and the guests from P.M.S Dental College also applauded the theme and innovations ending on a happy note.
Current Research and Community Based Dental Education
Department of Public Health Dentistry had conducted a CDE on “Current Research and Community Based Dental Education”, on 13th March 2018. Two International speakers, From University of Kwazulunatal(UKZN), Durban, South Africa, visited the institution and delivered Guest lectures. Dr.Shenuka Singh, the Acting Dean of College of Health Science, gave a brief insight about the health care services in south Africa and highlighted on the Current research projects and PG training at UKZN. This was followed by the Dr.Ilana Moodley, prof. in Community Health Dentistry department gave a lecture on Community Based Dental Education at UKZN. The faculties of Saveetha Dental College and Post Graduates, who were interested in widening their horizon of research participated and benefited from the lectures. The program ended with official meeting of Team from Department of Public Health Dentistry with the International delegates in discussing about potential collaborative activities from research and academic front.
Aesthetic challenges with immmediate implants
On 10th March 2018, Department of Prosthodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai, organized a webinar on aesthetic challenges in immediate implants by Dr.Suvarna Nene in collaboration with digital gurukul- know your roots. Dr.Suvarna Nene, a GDC graduate, is an eminent practicing implantologist with an experience of 30 years in the same field. There were approximately 80 students who attended the webinar. It was a mind boggling session which gave an insight about importance of aesthtics in immediate implant placement. There was particular emphasis on different ways of temporization and its consequent outcomes. As immediate implant placement is a very upcoming mode of treatment in this fast moving modern era, it has become essential for clinicians to incorporate such prompt and immediate solution in daily practice mainly for the comfort and esthetics of the patient. We hope to inculcate such techniques in our clinical practise. The lecture was refreshing and audience gave positive feedback.
Pterygoid Implants- An Insight
On 10th March, 2018, Department of Prosthodontics in Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals organized a CDE program/ guest lecture on Pterygoid Implants – An Insight. Eminent implantologist Dr. Vivek Gaur was invited as the guest speaker. Dr. Vivek Gaur has completed his PG cert. in advanced implants from Manipal, and diploma in advanced implants from Holland. He is keynote speakers in several cortical osseointegration implant symposiums and is also extensively trained in cortical implants by Dr. (Prof.)Stefen Ihde. The audience consisted of various budding prosthodontists, periodontists, implantologists and also clinicians. There were around 70 delegates. It was a two hour informative lecture with various case presentations which ended with an interactive doubt solving session. The highlight of the lecture was how pterygoid implants can be used in resorbed posterior maxillary arch without undergoing bone grafts and sinus lift procedures. The lecture definitely intrigued all the minds on the advantages and ease of placing pterygoid implants and also motivated the crowd to begin the use of these implants. It was an enlightening lecture which got positive feedback from all the delegates.
Edify- Depratment of Pedodontics
Pedo EDIFY version four, started with a social video on how colors are perceived. This was followed by award distribution to Dr.EMG.Subramanian and Dr.Dhanalakshmi for punctuality and workaholic respectively. Two education videos, one on the Non pharmacologic and Pharmacologic behavior management techniques were played. The Non-pharmocological behavior management techniques were illustrated as a mannequin challenge. The operation theater (OT) protocols were shown in detail, which would help the undergraduates to understand and mimic the same when they enter OT to assist for full mouth rehabilitation. The second video was on drug dosage calculation for children with a brief description on the drug metabolism.
Dr.Sujatha presented the various achievements of the department staff, postgraduate and undergraduate students. The staff of Pedodontics department held responsibilities and made the 39th ISPPD national conference a great success. Our staffs have conducted two Credit courses, two hands-on workshops, three CDE programmes for both undergraduate students and postgraduate students all in less than 10 months’ time. We also conducted the third edition of SPARC- Saveetha’s Pedodontic Advanced Revision Course and had speakers and delegates from various parts of South India. The staffs of Department of Pedodontics have given 17 guest lectures in various forums both in state and national levels. We are proud to announce that the six edition of the department’s journal is published.

The 17th Indian society of Periodontology (ISP) National PG convention 2018, was held at Chennai from 16th to 18th March 2018. A pre-conference course on “ Soft tissue expanders and management of flap during ridge augementation” was held at Saveetha dental college and Hopsitals on 16th march 2018 under the patronage of our honourable Chancellor Dr. N.M Veeraiyan and Director of Academics Dr.Deepak Nallaswamy. The pre-conference course was inaugurated by Dr. C.S Prasad who gave an inspiring talk and demonstrated few suturing techniques to the budding young periodontists. We had a total of 51 registrations for this course and had registrations from all states across the country. The course speaker Dr. Kaarthikeyan gave an elaborate lecture on soft tissue expanders and the surgical protocol to be followed for the surgery. This was followed by a live demonstration of a case in which soft tissue expander was placed on the patient. The course moderator Dr.N.D Jayakumar was actively interacting with the participants during the live surgery. We also had a second live demonstration of a case of ridge augmentation where a graft from the symphysis region was harvested and the flap management for this case was clearly demonstrated through this live video. The valedictory function was presided over by our dean Dr.N.D Jayakumar and the ISP organising committee member Dr. Ashok felicitated the course speaker Dr. Kaarthikeyan with a certificate of appreciation. Dr.Sheeja Varghese proposed the vote of thanks and congratulated all the delegates for their active participation as well as the organising team of the pre-conference course for contributing to the success of the conference. The online feed back from the delegates was very good and they were looking forward and willing to participate in the upcoming programs organised by our department.
Show Case 2018
The fourth international conference in case reports and case series, showCASE 2018 was held on the 23rd and 24th of March 2018 at Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals under the patronage of our Honourable Chancellor Dr. N.M. Veeraiyan and Organising Chair and Director, Dr. Deepak Nalkaswamy. The fourth edition was inaugurated on the 23rd of March, 2018 and had the unique distinction of collaborating with the European Society of Cosmetic Dentistry (ESCD). Under the guidance of Organising Secretary Dr. Abby Abraham, the theme of this edition focused on the passion, perfection and persistence displayed by dental students and practitioners in all phases of their dental careers. Despite a busy academic schedule amongst the dental student fraternity, the simultaneous organising of inter-collegiate competitions and university inspections at our contemporary institutions, the conference successfully hosted 350 delegates. Over 250 Paper presentations were chaired by 90 judges in 37 sessions which were broadly categorised based on the complexity of the case as Basic, Advanced or Master Clinical Cases. Among the 74 Master Clinical Cases presented, the top 16 cases were selected to be assessed by a panel of judges who sponsored prize money of INR5000 in the categories of best diagnostic challenge, interdisciplinary approach, aesthetic balance, restorative finesse, surgical skill and pedodontic care which was held on 24th March 2018. Following which, Guest Speaker Dr. Premila Suganthan provided her valuable insight on the Clinical Applications of Dental Lasers. The Valedictory Function was presided over by Honourable Chancellor Dr. N.M. Veeraiyan and Director Dr. Deepak Nalkaswamy. 37 Session Best prizes were awarded along with 16 Best Overall in the Basic and Advanced Clinical Cases categories. Dr. Kathiravan S won the Best Diagnostic Challenge, Dr. Ganesh Jeevanandan for the Best Pedodontic Care, Dr. Sudharsana Anadakumar was awarded the Best Interdisciplinary Approach, Dr. Surendar Sugumaran for the Best Aesthetic Balance, Dr. Abinaya Kannan for the Best Restorative Finesse and Dr. Dr. Mimansa Bhoj was the Best in Surgical Skill. Dr. Mimansa also won the overall award in the Master Clinical Case category which was sponsored by the ESCD in the form of a registration fee waiver of INR 15,000 at the upcoming ESCD Conference to be held in Lisbon, Portugal from the 20th-22nd September, 2018. Scientific Co-Cordinator Dr. Caroline Jacob gave the vote of thanks and congratulated all the delegates, award winners as well as the Organizing Team of showCASE 2018 for contributing to the execution and success of the conference.
World Oral Health Day
World Oral Health day was celebrated on every 20th of March 2018 at Panchayat Union Middle School, Kuthambakam.
Health talk focused on parts of a tooth, the types, functions, importance of preservation, mechanism of dental caries, prevention of caries and gum diseases and various treatment modalities available. The need for oral care was stressed and emphasis was made on early approach for healthy oral status.
Tooth brushing technique, its duration, proper storage and selection of tooth brush and tooth paste, frequency of brushing and changing tooth brush, mouth rinsing and technique to use dental floss was demonstrated to the audience using an appropriate health education aid with phantom oral cavity. A total of 174 students were benefited from this program.
