Perio Interaction
The Department of Periodontics had conducted the Eleventh edition of Perio-interaction at Saveetha dental college on 24th January 2020. The CDE programme was attended by all the post graduates and faculty from the department of Periodontics of various dental colleges in Tamil Nadu. There were five guest lectures on the various current and controversial topics in periodontics like tissue adhesives, guided implant surgery, digital smile designing, newer generation regenerative materials and ozone therapy. There were around 100 participants for the CDE programme and around 25 post graduate students presented E- poster on the various topics. The programme was well appreciated by the participants and five best posters were selected and the students were awarded during the valedictory function.
Pathoscope: World of the path under the mirrors
An Interactive guest lecture on the basics of histopathology, arranged by the Department of Pathology, Saveetha Dental College, SIMATS on 15th February 2020 between 12 noon to 1 pm. The guest lecturer Dr.G.A.Vasugi, Assistant professor of Pathology, Sri Ramachandra Institute of Medical and Health Education and Research is an eminent speaker who has experience in undergraduate teaching for eight years. The guest lecture highlighted the basic histopathology techniques include tissue sectioning and staining and also showed light on the morphology of cells in the histopathology sections. The speaker also described the embryonic origin and its derivatives and pathological lesions associated with each derivative. The program ended by felicitating the Guest speaker by Dr.M.P.Brundha, HOD, Department of Pathology, Saveetha Dental College, SIMATS.
Nanotechnology in Dentistry
Department of Microbiology conducted a CDE program on 8th of February 2020 under the theme of Nanotechnology in Dentistry. Faculty members organized a special lecture which was deliberated by Dr.G.Prathiba, Reader, Department of Microbiology, Sathyabama Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai. Dr.R.V.Geetha gave the introductory note about the scientific forum and welcomed the peer group. The lecture session was highly interactive and informative which ended with the prize distribution by the speaker to the academic toppers of the week.
Clinical Importance of Pharyngeal Arches, Pouches and Clefts
Guest lectures are an integral part of the Academic training at Saveetha. Eminent Anatomists, Researchers as well as Doyens from the Academia are invited periodically to share their valuable knowledge about various topics in basic medical sciences and research. These programs serve as an ideal platform for the students to supplement their theoretical knowledge with first hand perspectives from some of the stalwarts of the Medical and Dental Education and also assists in updating their knowledge with current concepts.
Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College has organized a CDE program on the topic “Clinical Importance of Pharyngeal Arches, Pouches and Clefts” for the first year BDS students on 15th February, 2020 at 12.00pm, in Decennial Hall, Saveetha Dental College. The speaker of the event was Dr. M. Vijayalakshmi, MBBS., MS., Professor, Department of Anatomy, Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.
The program commenced with warm welcome address and introduction of the speaker to the gathering by Mrs. S. Sangeetha, Senior Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, SDCH. Prof. Dr. M. Vijayalakshmi is a very well experienced teacher first briefly and systematically explained about the development of the pharyngeal arches, pouches and clefts. The speaker categorized the topic, into developmental anatomy, structures derived from each pharyngeal arches, pouches and clefts and the associated congenital deformities. The topic was fascinating which made the students to listen and observe keenly about the various concepts explained by the guest speaker. The presentation contained various images on developmental anomalies on pharyngeal apparatus. The lecture session was very much knowledgeable and worthy for listening.
The speaker was felicitated by Mrs. M.S. Thenmozhi, Head of the Department. Dr. Lavanya Prathap, Assistant Professor, Department of Anatomy delivered the Vote of Thanks.
Occlusal Indices Work Shop
The department of Orthodontics in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow conducted a one day hands on program on 20th January 2020. The program was on Occlusal indices and it was attended by 25 delegates from various states and countries. The participants were overwhelmed with the course and gave a content feedback for the same. The department also had enquiries about the next course and the details will be shared towards the end of this academic year.



M.Ortho Orientation Course 2020
The department of Orthodontics in collaboration with The Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow conducted the orientation course for the M. Ortho examinations of RCPS Glasgow on 21st and 22nd January 2020. The course was attended by 50 delegates from various states and countries. The program highlighted on how to prepare for the exam and also conducted a mock exam for the candidates. The candidates were asked to bring up their finished cases for evaluation and assessment. The course also highlighted on the theoretical aspects and provided them with references and study materials. The participants were enlightened about the exam pattern as well and were given guidance for their preparation. The delegates were delighted and thanked the department for organising the program.
Pongal Celebration
As every year this year too we had gala pongal celebration. A village was erected in Saveetha Thandalam campus with all the features seen in a village. UIt had pottery to cotton candy, hut to police station, all the rides like Columbus and giant wheel. Village cultural like poi cal kudhirai, tharai thappatai and many others were there. The Chancellor came in a Chariot to look at his kingdom and the happy pupil. Cultural competition like silambam, folk dance and pongal preparation amongst all the institution under the Saveetha umbrella made the event even more interesting. Overall its a revisit to to early childhood.
POST GRADUATE STAR SUMMIT 2020-Day 4
Dr. Krishnarao Appasani, an internationally renowned Indian born American Scientist was the Chief Guest. He was amazed with the kind of study designs and the protocols the students had followed in their research work. There were 464 posters, 31 judges and 41 peer judges. The post graduates displayed their research work on this day.
Dr. Krishnarao Appasani was generous enough to give us ideas on how to get research funds also he stayed for the valedictory and distributed 350 awards which includes awards of all four days presentation. Overall it was a rocking performance by the students.
STAR SUMMIT 2020-DAY 3
Day 3 of STAR Summit 2020 was yet another dazzling day with 452 research posters, 31 judges and 64 peer judges across four specialities Oral medicine & Radiology, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Orthodontics.
The Chief guest for the day was Dr. S.M. Balaji, a renowned Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, Chennai Tamil Nadu, India. He is a dental scientist. He is a pioneer in cleft & craniofacial surgeries, rhinoplasty, ear reconstruction, jaw reconstruction, facial asymmetry correction, dental implantology, maxillofacial surgery
Balaji conducts medical camps in India, North America, China, Russia and Maldives with the support of the governments as the majority of the people cannot afford these surgeries, by finding sponsors for poor patients and also operating free.
He is an International Consultant Maxillofacial, Cleft Lip & Palate Surgeon to many countries around the world. He also operates at at Victoria Hospital, Mahe – Seychelles, Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital Mauritius, Vacua Hospital, Mauritius, Indra Gandhi Hospital, Republic of Maldives. Formerly Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at Apollo Hospital, Colombo, Sri Lanka.He is also a Cleft Craniofacial Surgeon at G.P Pant Hospital, Andaman Nicobar Islands.
Impressing a person with such sound knowledge is not an easy task but, out students did it with utmost ease. He was amazed with the depth of knowledge our students have. He congradulated all of them and wished them all success.

Saveetha Transdisciplinary Annual Research 2020

Star Summit is an annual research extravaganza wherein all the students of Saveetha Dental College & Hospitals showcase their research work for the academic year 2019-2020.
The chief guest for the inauguration ceremony was Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Varshney, Scientist G, Head of the International Division. A geologist by profession is a researcher who works with numerous countries in partnership with India. He is a member of various associations and Scientific Advisor of the Government of India.
Day 1 of the summit had participants from four basic science departments, Anatomy, Physiology,Pharmacology, Microbiology which includes 418 presentations. There were 29 judges and 80 peer judges.
The Chief guest was impressed looking at the work done by our students and congratulated them all. he was amazed with the initiative by the institution and wished them great success. The judges and peer judges also stated that they had a great experience and gained knowledge with the research work. Overall all the hardworking by the students and the faculty fetched its fruit today.

Day 2 started with higher expectations as the previous day had set the standard. The Chief Guest for the day is Dr. Svapna Koppikar, Head, Professional Oral Care Asia Pacific Colgate Palmolive Company. A dentist by profession after practising for over 15 years she had worked in various capacities in Palmolive India lImited.
Department of Periodontics and Prosthodontics showcased their research which included 509 posters.There were about 38 judges and 85 peer judges. As always expected the students never failed to impress them all.
Mind Modeling
The guest lecture series this week was organised by the Department of Oral Pathology on 21.12.2019. The lecture was on ‘Mind Modeling’ delivered by Dr. Janani Vasudevan, MDS., (Oral Pathology) and a motivational speaker. She is a rhetorician, public speaker and Event Architect for Joy of Sharing, which works for the purpose of ‘Bringing About Universal Peace and Brotherhood by Inner Transformation’; the transformation which is possible in every individual by faith, dedicated efforts, perseverance and Grace. The guest lecture mainly focussed on exercising free will and prioritising tasks. Also highlighted on personality development and the power of saying NO. The students were highly interactive and responded promptly as the talk kindled students curiosity.
Citizen Safety App..Demonstration
Yet another evidence to prove the university social responsibility and interest towards safety of its pupil. Inspector of Police, Mr. Chandrasekar and Sub-inspector of Police, Mr. Ravichandran along with the lady police constables from ponnamllee Police Station were invited to Saveetha Dental College for the demonstration of “KAVALAN app”. The demonstrated on how to install the app, its usage, where and when can it be utilised and how easily they are available to help us. It was an effort to ensure safety both our students and also providing an awareness on things happening around them. It was a fruitful event and the policemen ensured all of us install the app on the very same day.
Creative Thinking
Department of Physiology conducted a CDE Programme on 14 th December 2019 entitled as “Creative Thinking”. MS.PREENU ASHOK, working as a Assistant Professor at CTTE College for women and practicing psychotherapist and clinical social welfare. She started the talk with activity based on creative thinking. Students were enjoyed a lot and also how to think creative in all aspects. Students were very much enthusiastic and the lecture ended up with good interactive session.
Career Development Programme
A career development program for under graduates , post graduates and faculties who would like to migrate to the UK was conducted on 14 th Dec 2019. Dr.Balbir Singh Bhandal along with two of his colleagues gave lecture on 1.Oration and life in the UK , 2.Working in the UK, and 3. ORE exam and career pathways .This program was an eye opener to know in detail about ORE PART 1 AND PART 2 Exam. In detail it was a incite in to what to expect and the expenses to immigrate and covert Indian dental license to UK registration. A student /Faculty can register themselves as a dental therapist in the UK and side by side study and clear ORE part 1 and 2 exam and gain their dental license registered in the UK. This can be achieved with the entry into the UK with a two tier visa. The Bhandal foundation have made more than 100 dentists dream to the UK possible.
ADI Global Conclave 2019
2019:Dentistry in India has gone through a long road with its own share of highs and lows to reach its present pinnacle. As dentistry in India steps into its 100th year, it is only befitting to remember Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed, the Father of Modern Dentistry in India. Dr.R.Ahmed, not suppressed by the limitations imposed by the society, took a giant leap to graduate from the university of Iowa as a Doctor of Dental surgery and then pursued his dream by starting the first dental college in India in 1920. He was also the proud recipient of Padma Bhushan award and was also elected as the first president of Indian Dental Association. It is at the spear head of revolutionary research, aiming at changing accepted mindset and ideologies in dental education, treatment and management. Students evolving into strong and confident professionals is considered as the ultimate success of the college. The inauguration of the conference was done by the Chief guest, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, Govt. of Tamilnadu, Thiru. O. Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College has organized CDE entitled “An insight into changes in aged mandible pertaining to mental foramen” for I year BDS students on 07 th Dec 2019 at 12:15. The speaker was Dr. G. Priya, Professor & Head, Department of Anatomy, RVS Dental College & Hospital, Coimbatore. The speaker was felicitated by Mrs. Thenmozhi. M.S, HOD and Faculties of the Department. Dr. Dinesh Premavathy, Lecturer, Department of Anatomy, gave the welcome address and introduced the speaker to the audiences. As the CDE program lecture started, the speaker discussed in detail about each and every part of the mandible and an age related changes of it and also discussed and correlated it with various dental and surgical aspects. It was very interesting that the speaker have presented various images of age related changes in mandible and classified it, which was very new to the audience. Finally the speaker discussed about case reports pertaining to the topic and the session ends with an interaction. Overall the session was highly informative. Mrs. S. Sangeetha, Senior Lecturer from Department of Anatomy gave the Vote of thanks.
HIV & Dentistry- World HIV Day & AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Department of Microbiology observed the World AIDS day on 30th of December 2019 at Saveetha Dental College and Hospital premises with the motto for the year as “Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Community by Community”. The faculties organized an awareness campaign towards the HIV threat among the faculties, visiting patients, technical staff and class IV servants. A special lecture entitled “HIV and tuberculosis: A double trouble” was arranged and was deliberated by Dr.Sai Kollapan, Laboratory Manager, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Centre, Shreveport, Louisiana, USA. Dr.A.S.Smiline Girija gave the introductory note about the scientific forum and welcomed the peer group. Dr.Sheeja Varghese, Dean of SDC felicitated the speaker with a memento. The speaker made a vibrant note on the recent updates on HIV and the impact of TB among AIDS patients. He also highlighted on the strategies of HIV treatment, preventive measures and the novel governmental plans to stop HIV spread in the community. The lecture session was highly interactive and informative which ended with the vote of thanks by Mr.N.P.Muralidharan.
Edify- Department of Orthodontics
Department of orthodontics presented their edify in a innovative way. Their theme was passion driven learning and they presented three different teaching methodologies. The first video showed that art coupled with activity could be used to teach the subject. Students were encouraged to draw relevant malocclusion and were given an activity using disposable cups to explain the parts of fixed appliances. In the second video the students were engaged in an activity using thermocol to learn about the parts of brackets and the various designs. The third video showcased an activity to explain functional matrix theory using art and activity. They stressed that when the activities chosen kindled the interest in students, they get involved and understand better. The videos were appreciated by all the faculties and received a standing ovation.
