STAR SUMMIT 2021
A research based approach is the need of the hour in anything and everything. Cultivating the same interest in young generation is of utmost importance, because a properly answered research question serves as building blocks for both academic excellence and sharpening Practical skills.
It is one’s curiosity and persistence that paves way towards providing revelations in arena of research. At Saveetha Dental College, we believe in the same and every year STAR SUMMIT is held as one week research extravaganza to celebrate the tremendous efforts of our students. As a team we have broken many stereo types and barriers in dental education and have successfully conducted our 8th Summit this year. By this we have created equal platform and opportunities right from Ist year Undergraduate to postgraduate level, with no restrictions in terms of area of interest in research or technical intricacies involved there in.
The 2021 constellation comprises of 2105 scientific posters, presented by 650 students eligible for 415 prizes. A weeklong event was witnessed by eminent personalities from different specialties like, Dr. Neelima Mishra (scientist ‘G’, SERB), Dr. Neelam Mittal from DCI, Dr. Sijju Mathew (President of Indian Society of Orthodontics), Dr. Ravi Kiran (President, Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology), Dr.P.Gunasekaran (Prof, dept of virology, Kings institute) and Dr.Radhika Muppa (Prof, Dept of Pedodontics).
The main outcome that we have observed is that the students are more confident and have learnt to work more efficiently out of their comfort zones. This has led to an out of box thinking. As a team, we have gained application based teaching learning experience. Experts of a particular field and the student peers critically analyze and evaluate the showcased work, this process serves two main purposesfirst we improvise and grow towards research with zero compromise in quality and secondly we motivate our fellow colleagues and students from other institutions to take up our path, which would collectively lead to a highly intellectual and self-sustained nation.

Webinar: Perspectives on the Push for Pulpal Preservation
Department of Cariology organized a webinar on “Perspectives on the push for pulpal preservation” on 16.10.20 presented by Dr. James L. Gutmann, DDS, Cert Endo, PhD, FACD, FICD, FADI, FAAHD, FDSRCSEd, Diplomate ABE, Professor, Chair and Postgraduate Program Director, Department of Endodontics, Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, Davie, Florida, Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M University College of Dentistry, Dallas, Texas.
The scope of Endodontics in the past two decades has been characterized by the evolution of technologies and devices for disinfection and filling of the root canal system. Current tissue engineering concepts and molecular biological assessments indicate that vital pulp preservation is possible and predictable. This is enabled by a better understanding of pulpal biology, and its responses to bacterial challenges, restorative procedures and advanced material properties. A true translational approach bridging basic science and clinical applications is essential to understanding why and how these concepts have evolved. The lecture was focused on the biologic perspectives and clinical applications necessary to achieve pulpal retention, repair and tissue regeneration and when inappropriate, to use new technologies for pulpal removal and tooth preservation with respect to the tooth structure and function. The webinar was attended by the post graduate students, faculty of both Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals and Nova Southeastern DentalCentre, Florida, USA.
